Our fundraising campaign for the Moldova Prison Project aims to enhance the conditions and mental health of individuals within Moldova's male, female, and youth prisons. We are dedicated to ensuring international human rights standards, emphasizing rehabilitation over punishment. We strive to assist inmates in developing new skills, reducing recidivism, and preventing future victimization.

Project Scope and Objectives

The project aligns with the United Nations Standard Minimum Rules for the Treatment of Prisoners—commonly referred to as the Nelson Mandela Rules—which advocate for prisoners to spend significant time outdoors and engage in physical activities whenever possible. Such activities are essential for maintaining both physical and mental well-being, reducing aggression, and facilitating social reintegration. By promoting physical activity within prisons, we not only enhance health outcomes but also instill values such as respect, cooperation, and self-discipline.

Our fundraising efforts aim to improve prison conditions by providing necessary equipment to establish a program focused on rehabilitation and mental health. An upgraded and well-equipped activity program will replace the outdated or non existent facilities currently in use.

Our primary objectives include:

  • Enhancing access to physical activity to support rehabilitation, alleviate stress, reduce violence, and provide meaningful engagement.
  • Replacing makeshift weights, such as plastic bottles filled with gravel, with safe and effective equipment.

We are committed to creating a safe and supportive environment for physical activity, benefiting both staff and inmates, including female prisoners and juveniles.

Prisoners' Role in Renovation

The Moldova Prison Project will actively involve prisoners in renovating the outdated gym facilities. By participating in this process, inmates can acquire valuable skills and develop a sense of ownership over their environment. This collaborative effort not only enhances the gym facilities but also nurtures community and cooperation among the inmates.

Benefits for All

Improving conditions and equipment for prisoners can build trust and engagement—crucial elements for effective rehabilitation. Currently, young offenders face idleness, adults often lack purpose, and mental health issues are prevalent. In women's prisons, there is a significant absence of meaningful activities. By addressing these challenges, we can cultivate a more supportive environment that promotes rehabilitation and positive change.
